State Meet Highlights

Desert Vista’s Dani Jones and Rio Rico’s Carlos Villarreal entered the three-day meet at Mesa Community College as the biggest stars and they but it was Tucson Magnet’s Lawrence Wallace who also soared into the spotlight with his performance in the long jump.

Top Performances

- Carlos Villarreal, a senior at Rio Rico signed with University of Arizona, ran the fastest 1,600-meter time in state history with a 4:03.97 in the Division III final, breaking the 2011 mark of 4:05.29 set by Tuba City’s Billy Orman. Bernie Montoya of Cibola still boasts the fastest mile time in state history at 4:01.32 from 2012. Villarreal, the Division II 800 champion in 1:54.23, also rallied Rio Rico’s 4 x 800 relay to a victory in 8:03.05 with a 1:50.1 anchor split.

- Dani Jones, a senior at Desert Vista headed to University of Colorado, won four gold medals for the first time in her career at the Division I state final. Jones swept the 800 (2:09.15), 1,600 (4:55.02) and 3,200 (10:19.62), in addition to helping Desert Vista run a US#1 9:01.51 in the 4 x 800 with a 2:08.23 anchor. Desert Vista’s relay, which also included Baylee Jones, Amanda Davis and Haley Wolf, ran the No. 2 time in state history.

- Lawrence Wallace, a senior at Tucson Magnet High bound for Alabama, improved on his personal best by nearly two feet with a US#2 25-1 ¾ long jump, the No. 5 mark in state history, to win the Division I state title.
