2018 Marks First Year for High School Javelin in ArizonaPublished by
dJavelin Will be Contested for the First Time as a Scoring Event in Arizona This SeasonBy Adam Kopet A new event is coming to the Arizona prep scene for the 2018 season. The Arizona Interscholastic Association will crown a state champion in the javelin for the first time, according to Richard Obert of AZCentral. Among the athletes hoping to call themselves the first Arizona state champion in javelin is Desert Vista junior Kevin Fairchild. He currently stands second in the state with a throw of 186-3 (56.76m). His best is only about two feet behind state leader Carlan Naisant, a Marcos de Niza senior. Empire sophomore Alyssa Perrini leads the state in the girls javelin with a throw of 116-5 (35.48m), The javelin has been contested at various meets in Arizona over the past several years as an exhibition event, but this will be the first year that it will be contested at the state meet. The move to add the javelin in Arizona began over 10 years ago, but it finally began to gain traction in the last several years. Now Arizona will be the 18th state to sanction javelin. |
